Parthenocissus quinquefolia ‘Monham’

Monham Virginia Creeper is a striking variegated form of Virginia Creeper, known for its bold, paint-splattered foliage that stands out in any landscape. Discovered in 1974 growing wild on a wooded embankment in Walker Township, Pennsylvania by Joe Lankalis, this unique selection was identified for its dramatic yellow and green-speckled variegation. Ultimately, Mr. Lankalis shared his discovery with his friend Bob Fincham, noted nurseryman and conifer expert. With the help of then Monrovia Nursery propagator Brian Jacobson, Bob Fincham patented and introduced the plant to the nursery trade in 1997. In cooler weather, the foliage takes on a subtle pink hue, adding seasonal interest to its already eye-catching display. A vigorous, deciduous climber, ‘Monham’ attaches to walls, fences, and other structures via small adhesive pads at the ends of its tendrils, making it ideal for creating living walls or quick coverage in the landscape. It can reach up to 50 feet over time, growing 6–10 feet annually under optimal conditions. While best known for its bold variegation, the plant also offers beautiful fall color—its red tones mingling with the yellow splotching

patterns for a truly dynamic display. ‘Monham’ is a tough and adaptable vine, tolerating a wide range of soils and exposures once established. Like others in the genus Parthenocissus, it is resilient and low-maintenance, though protection from deer may be necessary in areas where browsing is heavy. Whether used to soften architectural lines, cover unsightly structures, or simply bring vibrant foliage into the garden, ‘Monham’ makes a memorable impression. What am I buying?

We sell Monham Virginia Creeper as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 2-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
