Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Munchkin’

The Munchkin Hydrangea was one of two Oakleaf Hydrangeas (the Ruby Slippers Hydrangea being the other) developed and released by the U.S. National Arboretum’s shrub breeding program in McMinnville, Tennessee. A 1997 seedling obtained by open pollination of the ‘Sikes Dwarf’ cultivar, it was officially released in 2010. With very compact form and petite, miniature flower panicles, the Munchkin cultivar is a better suited shrub for small residential landscapes than the species. Like the species, it is deciduous in nature and has wonderfully colorful flowers in the late Spring, early Summer. Flowers transform from white blooms to light pink to pleasant cream by the fall. Foliage is smaller than the species and turns from dark green to glowing red in the fall. The shrub is disease and insect free, and it prefers a full sun environment. What am I buying?

We sell Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangeas as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 4-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
