Berberis julianae

Are animals forging new footpaths across your outdoor spaces? Do troublesome pedestrians ignore your sidewalks and property lines? Have you ever wished you could grow an an impenetrable barrier hedge tougher than nails? Then look no further than Wintergreen Barberry. Considered the hardiest of the evergreen barberries (down to -6°), the plant forms an extremely thorny (up to 1.5″ thorns) dense mound with spiny leaves – impassible to all. Originally from to Central China, the plant was introduced to the US in early twentieth century. The plant is tolerant to a wide range of soil types and is receptive to pruning. In the more southern limits of its range, the leaves may bronze or turn a good wine-red color during the winter months. In the spring it produces a showy display of yellow flowers. Planting instruction can be found at boydnursery.net/planting/.

What am I buying?

We sell Wintergreen Barberry as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 4-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
