Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’

Rooted cuttings are 4-8″ in height. The Little Gem magnolia is a dwarf Southern Magnolia that keeps a narrow, compact habit. Like the species Magnolia grandiflora, Little Gem magnolias have large glossy, leathery leaves with brown undersides and characteristically fragrant, creamy white flowers. A heavy bloomer that begins blooming within the first three years and blooms from May to October, the cultivar was first discovered and developed by Warren Steed in 1952. A chance seedling, the tree was released to the world in 1966. Best for USDA Hardiness Zones 6 through 10, the broadleaf evergreen thrives in full sun and is tolerant of most soils. The Little Gem magnolia grows 20 to 25 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide with columnar shape. Rate of growth is slow (approximately 18 inches per year). It makes an excellent landscape specimen, and can be used to create screens and hedges. More planting instruction can also be found at boydnursery.net/planting/.
