Ilex x attenuata ‘Big John’
The Big John holly is a male hybrid between a Dahoon Holly (Ilex cassine) and an American Holly (Ilex opaca). According to Holies, The Genus Ilex by Fred C. Galle, the Big John was a seedling of the Foster No. 2 holly. It was discovered by J.A. Webb and introduced in 1980. The Big John holly is a capable American holly pollenizer because of its heritage.
