Ilex x ‘Emily Bruner’

First introduced by Don Shadow of Shadow Nursery in Winchester, TN during his time at the University of Tennessee, the namesake and discoverer of the tree was Emily Bruner – a famed Knoxville horticulturalist and writer. The holly was the result of cross pollination between a Burford Holly (Ilex cornuta ‘Burfordii’) and a Lusterleaf Holly (Ilex latifolia) in Emily’s garden. The Emily Bruner holly has quickly become one of the most popular holly cultivars in Tennessee landscapes. The evergreen holly thrives in full sun and is tolerant of most soils. All hollies are dioecious – meaning that male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. The Emily Bruner is a female holly and requires the presence of a male pollenizer for berry production. For many, the male pollenizer of choice is the companion cultivar James Swan holly (also discovered by Emily Bruner and introduced by Don Shadow); however, almost any male that flowers in the springtime will do. In addition to its tight clusters of berries positioned around the branches, the Emily Bruner holly has showy yellow flowers and lustrous leaves. The tree excels as both a living fence and a specimen plant. Planting instruction can be found at boydnursery.net/arrival-care-notes/.

What am I buying?

We sell Emily Bruner Hollies as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 2-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
