Parthenocissus quinquefolia

Virginia Creeper (also called Victoria Creeper, Five-Leaved Ivy, Woodbine, and Five Finger) is an excellent ornamental plant for shading buildings and other structures. This vine can grow 30′ to 50′ and more; the structure upon which it climbs is the limiting factor. The plant is especially notable for its deep red to burgundy autumn foliage. Frequently used as a climbing plant, the vine is particularly safe to grow on edifices because of its non-harmful method of attachment. Clinging with the aid of surface disks rather than mortar-harming roots and deciduous in nature, Virginia Creeper can help shade buildings during the summer and allow surfaces to absorb heat during the winter. This feat can help lower energy consumption. Virginia Creeper produces small green flowers in the late spring and small purplish berries during the late summer and fall. The berries are held well into winter. The creeper is a prolific climber and has been known to reach heights of 100 feet. Its leaves are composed of five leaflets joined to a central point on the vine. More planting instruction can also be found at boydnursery.net/arrival-care-notes/.

What am I buying?

We sell Virginia Creeper as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 2-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
