Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’

The Autumn Flowering Higan Cherry is a small deciduous ornamental tree often regarded as one of the most cold, heat, and stress tolerant varieties available for residential and commercial landscaping. Like nearly all of its Japanese ornamental cherry counterparts, the exact origin and botanical lineage of the Autumn Flowering Higan Cherry is lost to time. The species can be remarkably long lived as evidenced by the Beni-Shidare Zakura – the oldest living specimen at over 1000 years old. The variety has semi-double light pink flowers that appear and open sporadically during warmer Fall months and then fully during the following Spring (approximately late March to early April) before its leaves emerge. Because of its back-to-back flowering periods and fairly fast growth rate, the tree makes a wonderful urban and street tree that becomes somewhat mounding with age.

What am I buying?

We sell Weeping Higan Cherries as rooted cuttings. Taken from Wikipedia, “a plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking.” Put more simply, a rooted cutting is a small clone of the specimen from which it was taken. As a genetically identical clone, the cutting shares all the characteristic traits and attributes of the cultivated variety. Our rooted cuttings are 3-6 months old and 4-8 inches in stem length above the soil line. They are clipped from our private stock plants and grown in root pruning trays at our temperature controlled greenhouse.
